Hot & Cold
Hot & Cold Therapy Products – Thermotherapy and Cryotherapy for Pain & Recovery
Hot and cold therapy are two of the most widely recommended first-line treatments for musculoskeletal pain and injury. At Meddey, our hot and cold therapy collection brings together the complete range of thermotherapy and cryotherapy products including hot water bags, electric heating pads, infrared lamps, paraffin wax baths, ice packs, cold compression wraps, reusable gel packs, and contrast therapy kits. Used by physiotherapists, sports trainers, and patients at home, these products offer safe, effective, drug-free pain management for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.
When to Use Heat Therapy
Heat therapy (thermotherapy) is best suited for chronic pain conditions, muscle stiffness, and spasm. It is most effective when applied before exercise or stretching to improve tissue extensibility. Common indications include chronic lower back pain, neck stiffness and cervical spondylosis, morning stiffness from osteoarthritis, menstrual cramps, muscle tension headaches, and sore muscles after physical activity. Heat should be avoided in the first 48–72 hours after acute injury when swelling is present.
When to Use Cold Therapy
Cold therapy (cryotherapy) is indicated for acute injuries with swelling and inflammation. Ice application causes vasoconstriction, reduces oedema, slows nerve conduction (pain relief), and decreases tissue metabolism. Common indications include acute sprains and strains within 48 hours, post-surgical swelling, acute flare-ups of inflammatory arthritis, sports injuries (ankle sprain, knee contusion), and post-exercise muscle soreness.
Hot and Cold Therapy Products at Meddey
Hot Water Bags: Classic rubber 2-litre hot water bags for localised heat. Long heat retention, safe for back, neck, and menstrual pain.
Electric Heating Pads: Adjustable temperature moist and dry heat pads for sustained heat therapy without repeated refilling.
Infrared Lamps: 150W and 250W infrared lamps for deep penetrating heat therapy in clinics and at home.
Paraffin Wax Baths: Hand and foot wax dip therapy for arthritis and post-fracture joint stiffness.
Gel Ice Packs: Reusable gel packs that can be frozen for cold therapy or heated for warm therapy – versatile for both applications.
Cold Compression Wraps: Adjustable compression wraps with integrated cold compartment for post-injury RICE protocol management.
The RICE Protocol
For acute injuries, the RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) using cold therapy within the first 48 hours remains a cornerstone of first-line management. After the acute phase, transitioning to heat therapy helps resolve residual stiffness and promotes tissue repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I apply ice to an injury? Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time, with at least 1 hour between applications. Never apply ice directly to skin – use a cloth barrier to prevent ice burns.
Can I alternate heat and cold therapy? Yes, contrast therapy (alternating heat and cold) is used by physiotherapists to stimulate circulation and reduce chronic swelling. A typical protocol is 3 minutes heat followed by 1 minute cold, repeated 3–4 times.
