When someone is confined to bed for a long time after a stroke, surgery, spinal injury or in old age, one of the biggest risks is pressure sores - also called bedsores or decubitus ulcers. They can develop quickly, are painful, and are hard to heal once they form. An anti-bedsore air mattress is the simplest and most widely recommended way to reduce that risk at home. This guide explains how it works and how to choose one.
Why bedridden patients get bedsores
When a person lies in the same position for hours, their body weight presses constantly on certain areas - the hips, tailbone, heels, shoulders and back of the head. This constant pressure squeezes the small blood vessels and cuts off blood flow to the skin. Without fresh blood, the skin and tissue begin to break down, and a sore forms. The areas over bone are most at risk because there is little muscle or fat to cushion them.
How an anti-bedsore air mattress helps
An air mattress sits on top of the regular bed mattress and connects to a small electric pump. The mattress is made of many air cells, and the pump inflates and deflates them in turn. This means the pressure points under the patient are constantly changing - one set of cells supports the body while another set deflates and relieves pressure, then they swap. Because no single area is under pressure for too long, blood keeps flowing to the skin and the risk of sores drops sharply.
Types of air mattresses
Bubble or cell type
Made of many small bubble-like cells, this type is lighter and more affordable. It is well suited to prevention and to lighter-weight patients who are at moderate risk.
Tubular type
Built from larger side-to-side tubes, this type gives stronger, more even support and is better for heavier patients, higher-risk cases, and long-term bedridden care. Some tubular mattresses allow individual tubes to be replaced if damaged.
How to choose the right one
Match the mattress to the patient weight and risk level - a higher-risk or heavier patient needs a stronger tubular mattress. Check that the pump is good quality, reasonably quiet, and offers adjustable firmness. You will find suitable options in our hospital beds and furniture collection, alongside beds and supports for home care. If you are setting up a complete home care bed, our hospital bed for home care guide walks you through the bed itself, and our mobility and daily living aids range covers other items that make caregiving easier.
Using it safely - and what an air mattress cannot do
An air mattress greatly reduces the risk of pressure sores, but it does not remove the need for good basic care. Caregivers should still reposition the patient regularly, generally about every two hours, keep the skin clean and dry, ensure good nutrition and hydration, and check the skin daily for any red or broken areas. Most importantly, an air mattress is a prevention aid - if a pressure sore has already formed, it needs proper medical attention. Please involve a doctor or a home-care nurse for any existing wound, and use the mattress to prevent new ones.
Frequently asked questions
Does an air mattress completely prevent bedsores?
It greatly reduces the risk, but it works best together with regular repositioning, skin care and good nutrition. It is a strong prevention aid, not a guarantee on its own.
Bubble type or tubular type - which should I choose?
Bubble type suits lighter patients and prevention. Tubular type gives stronger support for heavier patients, higher risk and long-term use. Tell us the patient weight and we will recommend the right one.
Does the pump run all the time?
Yes, the pump runs continuously to keep cycling air between the cells. Good pumps are designed to be quiet so they do not disturb sleep.
Can it be used on any bed?
Yes, the air mattress is placed on top of the existing bed mattress and works on a normal bed as well as a hospital bed.
Do you provide GST billing and delivery across India?
Yes. All our products are genuine, billed with GST and delivered across India.
